Egy egykori orosz arisztokrata megtudja, hogy anyósa a szalongarnitúra egyik székébe rejtette a családi ékszereket az 1917-es forradalom idején. Csakhogy tizenkét ilyen szék van, és a nagy káoszban ezek különböző gazdákhoz kerültek. Megkezdődik a kincs utáni hajsza. A főhőshöz csatlakozik egy vérbeli szélhámos, kalandjaik során fél Oroszországot bejárják. Útjukat többször keresztezi egy elszánt pap, aki szintén a kincs után nyomoz.
