A szerelem, a szenvedély természetét kutatja kitartóan regényeiben, filmforgatókönyveiben Marguerite Duras, a világhírű francia írónő. Történetei egyszerűnek tűnhetnek, hősei hallgatagok, szűkszavúan élik mindennapjaikat, mintha nem történne velük semmi, de ez a semmi feszültséggel terhes, vihar előtti csönd, s ha megjön a zivatar, az sem hoz enyhülést.
Esküvője előtti éjszakán a vőlegény egy pisztolylövéssel megöli menyasszonyát, mert az megcsalta a legjobb barátjával, majd végez vele is. A gyilkosságtól fölzaklatott spanyol kisvárosba útjukat megszakítva, a vihar elől menekülve, megáll Maria és családja. Maria ezen az éjszakán érti meg, hogy élete ugyanarra tart, mint Rodrigo Paiestraé, a gyilkosé.
A történet nem pusztán a szereplőkben, a főszereplőben, Mariában fájdalmasan és csöndesen végbemenő veszteségről szól, hanem szól a szenvedély hatalmáról: „Ki ne szeretne – egyszer, féltékenységből – megölni valakit?”
