A neves színház igazgatója ideges a sok színésznő jelölttől, akik egyfolytában jelentkeznek a színházhoz, és mindegyik "azt hiszi, hogy ezen a pályán csak szerelemmel lehet karriert csinálni...". Egy hirtelen jött ötlettől vezérelve az igazgató Skultétinek, az írnoknak adja ki magát és a zeneszerző fogadja a jelentkezőket mint "igazgató". Ekkor érkezik meg a mindenki szívébe belopódzó, egyszerű és szókimondó selmeci "segéd szubrett", ILONKA... Vajon erre, hogyan reagál a szigorú igazgató úr..?
