A Marica grófnő, Kálmán Imre legizgalmasabb és legkedveltebb műve, önmaguk hazugságainak hálójában vergődő szerelmesekről szól.
Gróf Szapáry Wittemberg Péter nem jegyzi el a számára kijelölt ismeretlen menyasszonyt, ezért vagyonából kitagadják, és álnéven dolgozik tovább volt birtokán. Az új tulajdonos, Marica grófnő a kérők elől ide menekül, de meg nem tartott eljegyzése szégyenét is itt szeretné elfelejteni. A tiszttartóval a feszültségek ellenére is első látásra megtetszenek egymásnak, ám a szegény férfi és a gazdag grófkisasszony csak sok félreértésből fakadó bonyodalom után lehetnek egymáséi.
