Shakespeare a bolondban (jester) bölcset lát, és sokszor éppen a bölccsel állítja szembe. Alig van drámája, amelyikben ne magasztalná fel az udvari bolondot, bohócot. Sok ember meghökkentő, kíméletlen igazságát a bolond szájára adja. Ő az, aki nem tud másképp, csak szőr ellenében simogatni. Nem a vidámsága kacagtat. Pontos ítéletei, váratlan szúrásai nevettetnek előbb, később, mikor a színpadon már csak a hűlt helye van, és ő már rég az öltözőben vetkezik, szavai akkor ejtenek gondolkozóba.
