Egy orosz kisváros polgármestere biztos forrásból értesül arról, hogy Pétervárról revizor érkezik hozzájuk inkognitóban. Alighogy a város elöljáróival közli a fontos hírt, máris megerősítést nyer a gyanú, hogy a két hete a városba érkezett és azóta ott állomásozó idegen fiatalember nem lehet más, mint a hivatali visszaéléseket felderítő, rettegett ellenőr.
Gogol komédiáját 177 éve mutatták be először, és azóta is folyamatos sikernek örvend. Talán azért, mert elhisszük a szerzőnek, hogy mindannyiunknak van vaj a fején. „Mit röhögtök? Magatokon röhögtök!” – kiáltja a vígjáték egyik jelenetében a színházi szállóigét a polgármester.
