If there were an Olympics for instruments or instrumentalists, participants would surely have to compete at this event in playing various musical pieces and staging performances to test their skills, strength, explosiveness and speed. And all this would certainly happen to the greatest delight of spectators and fans. Concerning a Vivaldi concerto, for example, one might be thrilled by the dizzying speed of the piccolo effortlessly conquering heights; and the acrobatic acts of the movement ‘La campanella’ of Paganini’s famous Violin Concerto would certainly take one’s breath away. For this Olympics, Mozart could enter his flute and harp duo, Nino Rota could enter the double bass and Haydn the trumpet. Which of these instruments are you going to cheer for at the concert?

As it is a latent Kodály season, it seems only fitting that the concert at the OPERA honouring the events of 1956 should feature works by the composer. In that same year, the short-lived Revolutionary Council of Hungarian Intellectuals elected him as its president. Throughout his entire oeuvre, Kodály consistently reinforced Hungarian national identity. The programme gains both colour and a ceremonial character from the hymn-like and dance-infused compositions of his middle and later years.
