Henriette-et, a gazdag Lapussa család kegyelemkenyéren tartott leányát – habár a tehetséges fiatal ügyvédet, Vámhidy Szilárdot szereti – nagyapja a gazdag Hátszegi báróhoz kényszeríti. A két fiatal a maga módján próbál tiltakozni: önként elvetnék maguktól az életet, de szerencsére megmentik őket. Ennek azonban nem sokáig örülhetnek: Hátszegi báró magával viszi a lányt Erdélybe, ahol a titokzatos Fatia Negra tartja rettegésben a vidéket.
