Kölcsey Ferenc szerint „a szerelem idegen plánta a magyar irodalomban”, de tudjuk, hogy a Csongor és Tündét olvasta és - maga ellen szólva - pozitívan értékelte. A magyar irodalmi kánon egyik legcsillogóbb és legtöbbet méltatott gyöngyszeme, a Csongor és Tünde címének hallatán diákok százezrei egyszerre és álmukból felkeltve vágják rá: a romantikus dráma fogalmának legpontosabb definíciója. A kecskeméti előadás azonban tartogat meglepetéseket: nem kisebb dologra vállalkozunk, mint hogy bebizonyítsuk, egyik legfontosabb nemzeti drámánk még most is elkoptathatatlan mondanivalóval találhat utat szívünkhöz.

This ballet's plot is inspired by The Corsair, a famous verse written in 1814 by Lord Byron, who towered over an entire generation of English Romantic poets.
While the Fountain of Tears bubbles before him, Giray, khan of the Tatars, is lost in brooding. Just as the flow from the marble fount cannot be exhausted, his own sorrow will never diminish, either. The story of the Fountain of Bakhchisarai is set in motion by a romance recounting the reason for the khan's gloom.
