CAFe Budapest undertakes to settle an old debt of the Hungarian opera scene. Földindulás, Sándor Balassa’s fourth opera, which is based on János Kodolányi’s drama, has been awaiting its premiere for one and a half decades. “I wrote the libretto myself. The story take place in the Ormánság, and is about the Hungarian land and Hungarian life.”
Throughout a rich career of more than fifty years, Sándor Balassa has always remained, despite all the impressions he received from the diverse modern schools of music, a “singing” composer who is inspired by melody, even when he composes for a symphonic orchestra, rather than for voices. Ádám Medveczky, the conductor who has long been a devotee of the opera Földindulás (Cataclysm), said recently: “I am very happy to be able to present Sándor Balassa’s piece at a concert performance. Following some experimentation, Hungarian composers have returned to the classical corner stones of music, melody, harmony and rhythm.”

Our offer
What happens when the worst traits of a power-hungry prince incapable of resisting earthly pleasures, a morally corrupt, vengeful, manipulative woman, and a desire-driven but highly impressionable teenage girl all erupt at the same time upon the appearance of a holy man?
There are evenings when our Opera House cannot perform because rehearsals are ongoing on stage until the evening. There are audience members who can only afford to hear their favourite pieces with a discount. And there are works that, although very popular, cannot be staged every season due to the congestion of productions.
