"Közhírré tétetik, hogy a király egyetlen lánya vészesen szomorú. Egy röpke mosolyt sem látott átsuhanni az arcán senki, mióta világ a világ. Sürgős segítségre van szükség! Jöjjenek mindenféle viccmesterek, bátor kecskepásztorok, kelekótya hősök, vagy csibész sarlatánok! Bárki, aki meg tudja nevettetni, a kezét is megkapja, és vele együtt a fél birodalmat.”
A próbálkozók azonban mind kudarcot vallanak, de egy napon megjelenik egy titokzatos pásztor. Aranyszőrű bárány van nála…

The story of the Fountain of Bakhchisarai is set in motion by a romance recounting the reason for the khan's gloom.
