Kata és Bianca egy gazdag páduai úr lányai. Egyik szelíd, mint a galamb, de a másik vad, indulatos, csípős nyelvű, fékezhetetlen. A kisebbiknek akad is kérője bőven, de apja nem adja férjhez addig, míg a nagyszájút el nem veszi valaki. Hiába a sok kérő, Makrancos Kata senkinek nem kell. Ebben a kilátástalannak tűnő helyzetben jelenik meg Petrucchio, akit nem riaszt vissza a feladat. Elhatározza, hogy megzabolázza a gazdag, csinos, vonzó hárpiát.
