A középpontban egy fehér alapon fehér csíkokkal ékesített festmény és három régi barát áll. Egyikük megveszi a festményt, ami nagyon drága. Talán egy barátságba kerül. Vagy esetleg még többe.
A francia szerzőnő sziporkázó szövegében egymást követik a feszült és komikus pillanatok, a Művészet egyszerre nevettet és elgondolkodtat. Szó lesz titkokról, hazugságokról, az emberi kapcsolatok bonyolultságáról, és egy kicsit a művészetről is. Hiszen eligazodni, idomulni, engedni vagy éppen csökönyösnek lenni: művészet.

Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
