Életének utolsó évében Mozart csodálatos zenés mesejátékot komponált: A varázsfuvolát. Tündérmesébe öltöztetett, egyszerre népies és filozófiai emelkedettségű tanító történetet öntött zenébe. A librettót a zeneszerző szabadkőműves páholytestvére, Emanuel Schikaneder írta, aki külvárosi színházát akarta fellendíteni a meseoperával.
