Az író kíméletlenül elbánik Tartuffel. Nem az igazi hit és vallás ellen támad, hanem azok ellen, akik ezt kihasználják. Ez a gazember elindult világkörüli útjára. A „tartuffe-ség" ma is érvényes: a ravasz, kíméletlen cselvetés és a gondolkozás nélküli hiszékenység.
