A történet így szól: Amikor 1888 újév napján Csajkovkszij meglátogatja azt az Adolph Brodsky-t, aki hegedűversenyének bemutatóján a szólista volt, az egyik szobából Brahms c-moll triója szűrődik ki. A zongoránál maga Brahms ült. Bár Csajkovszkijt nem nyűgözte le Brahms zenéje, a próbát követő vacsorán barátságot kötöttek.
