This format was made necessary by life. By size, the Ybl Palace is one of the medium-sized opera houses, but in terms of beauty it is first class, which we further enhance by lighting it gorgeously. On its podium, or the top of its orchestra pit, the soloist can stand almost fully surrounded by the audience, and accompanied by our brand new Steinway – and of course an instrumentalist partner – he can give a most memorable recital featuring his favourite opuses for voice as well as his sensitively interpreted opera arias in the second part after the interval. Although the Mexican tenor does not appear on the front pages, he has achieved fame with his beautifully coloured lyrical voice, and who would have thought that by the time he steps on our opera stage again, he will be well into the fourth decade of his career! Vargas sticks to his specialization carefully planning his roles, and also feels at ease performing songs calling for more elaborate interpretations.

Our offer

While the Fountain of Tears bubbles before him, Giray, khan of the Tatars, is lost in brooding. Just as the flow from the marble fount cannot be exhausted, his own sorrow will never diminish, either. The story of the Fountain of Bakhchisarai is set in motion by a romance recounting the reason for the khan's gloom.

A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.

Two giants of Baroque music meet during the Advent season in a performance by the OPERA Orchestra and Chorus. Bach’s well-known Magnificat is performed in its original version, in E-flat major, supplemented with movements specifically tailored to the festive season by the composer himself.
