A mai hétköznapi viseletben elmondott beszéd, melyben az athéni bírák maguk a hallgatók, egy olyan erkölcsi normát kíván felmutatni (rendkívül szórakoztató formában), mely talán kiveszőben van. Helytállásról van szó, az „ügyekhez” való ragaszkodásról, arról, hogy az „erény és igazságosság” fontosabb, mint a pénz. S, mivel ma egyre kevesebben gondolkodnak így, a Védőbeszéd hézagpótló műnek számít.
