A történetben tizenöt év után találkozik két régi iskolatárs. Miltnek jól megy a sora, nagymenő, sikeres, nős ember. Harry viszont egész idő alatt hiába kereste az élete értelmét. Ezért épp a folyóba készül vetni magát. De hogyan akarhat valaki meghalni anélkül, hogy megismerte volna a szerelmet? Milt szerint a szerelemért érdemes élni. a gazdag, ám fösvény üzletember ebben a pillanatban ráébred a megoldásra: felajánlja barátjának saját feleségét. az ötlet olyannyira abszurd, hogy Harry mégis inkább felmászik a hídkorlátra. Aztán megjelenik Milt temperamentumos felesége Ellen, és a két ellentétes karakterű férfi élete rendkívüli fordulatot vesz.
