Egy átlagos New York-i napon a 86 éves Mr. Green lelép a járdáról és Ross Gardiner autója kis híján elgázolja. A fiatalembert gondatlan vezetésért hat hónapnyi társadalmi munkára ítélik, amelyet balszerencséjére épp Mr. Green-nél kell letöltenie: hetente egyszer meg kell látogatnia öreg áldozatát, hogy gondoskodjon róla. A kényszer szülte vizitek természetesen egyik félnek sincsenek ínyére, amelyek remek helyzetkomikumokra adnak lehetőséget a mogorva, szűkszavú özvegyember és a dinamikus fiatal irodista között.
