Amikor az elmaradott Glogovára új plébános, Bélyi uram érkezik, különös csoda történik. A viharban Szent Péter egy piros esernyőt borít Bélyi uram kishúgára, Veronkára. Ezzel megindul Glogova felvirágzása: megújul a paplak, Veronkához francia nevelőnőt szerződtetnek, özvegy Münz Jónásné személyében pedig a városkában fellendül a kereskedelem is…Telnek-múlnak az évek, s a kis Veronka eladósorba kerül. Megismerkedik Beszterce híres ügyvédjével, Wibra Gyurival. A fiatal, feltörekvő jogász és a Szent Péter esernyőjének áldásával felnőtt papkisasszony azonnal egymásba szeret. Közéjük áll azonban Wibra Gyuri öröksége, amelyet megboldogult apja – hogy, hogy nem? – egy esernyő szárába rejtett. S megindul a harc a vagyonért.

A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
