Ágoston, a szerzetes visszaemlékezik életére. Feltárulnak a gyermekkor évei, a lázadó ifjúság, a felnőtt férfi hiábavaló próbálkozásai és a megtérés mindent beragyogó emléke.
"...valami fügefa alá heveredtem és szabad folyást engedtem könnyeimnek. És íme, a szomszédos házból hangot hallok. Ének csendül, nem tudom, hogyan:
Tolle lege! Tolle lege!
Csupán arra magyaráztam ezt a szózatot, hogy mennyei parancs zendül most felém:
Üssem fel a Szentírást és olvassam el a legelőször szemembe ötlő fejezetet."

Az Evangélium örök üzenete eljutott Ágostonhoz. Részesülhetett a megváltás kegyelmében: Jézus Krisztus helyette, miatta és érte is meghalt a kereszten. Az ebből fakadó hála és hit beragyogja vallomásokká sűrűsödött emlékezéseit.

Two giants of Baroque music meet during the Advent season in a performance by the OPERA Orchestra and Chorus. Bach’s well-known Magnificat is performed in its original version, in E-flat major, supplemented with movements specifically tailored to the festive season by the composer himself.
