Van élet negyven felett… legalábbis hosszas vívódás után erre a megállapításra jut Mrs. Bradshaw, született Shirley Valentine, a középkorú, elhanyagolt liverpooli háziasszony. Évtizedek óta teljesen mindegy, hogy a férjéhez vagy a falhoz beszél, a hatás ugyanaz. Épp ezért dönt úgy: a falat választja.
Egy szép napon, egy hirtelen impulzusnak engedve igent mond a nagy álomra, és elutazik Görögországba, ahol izgalmas belső utazásra indulunk főhősünk kalauzolásával a nap, a bor és a tenger hazájában…
