Az 1970-es évek Párizsában játszódó Prima Donna, amint arra címe is utal, úgynevezett művész opera: az egykor népszerű és elismert díva egy napját követhetjük nyomon a történetben, aki az utolsó esélyt megragadva szeretné még egyszer eljátszani a korábbi sikereit jelentő szerepet, abban bízván, hogy ezáltal kitörhet a feledés és mellőzöttség homályából. A Bernadette Colomine szövegíró közreműködésével készült, zajos nemzetközi sikert aratóPrima Donna Rufus Wainwrightelső operája, melynek bemutatójára Angliában 2009-ben Manchesterben, a Palace Theatre-ben, 2010-ben a Luminato Festival-on Torontóban, illetve ugyanebben az évben Londonban a Sadler’s Wells Theatre-ben, Amerikában pedig 2012-ben, a New York City Operában került bemutatásra.
Az 1973-as születésű Rufus Wainwright elsősorban pop-rock előadóként ismert a nagyközönség számára, valamint olyan filmbetétdalok előadójaként, mint például a Moulin Rouge, Bridget Jones és olyan neves előadókkal dolgozott együtt, mint Robbie Williams, Pet Shop Boys és Leonard Cohen.
