Bármilyen hihetetlen, Andrew Lloyd Webber még csak huszonkét éves volt, amikor 1970-ben a Palace Theatre bemutatta második rockoperáját, amelyet a nála négy évvel idősebb, és valamivel komolyabb szakmai múlttal rendelkező Tim Rice-szal közösen írt. A Jézus Krisztus szupersztár azonnal hatalmas sikert aratott, és a londoni premiert követően a világ szinte valamennyi országában színpadra került. Amikor az alkotókat a musical témaválasztásáról kérdezték, ők rendkívül egyszerű magyarázattal szolgáltak. Ahogy fogalmaztak, szerintük „nagyszerű” sztori a bibliai történet. Ami a zene mellett a mű jellegzetessége: a világ legismertebb történetét nem a megszokott módon, hanem Júdás szemszögéből ábrázolja.

Since 1968, one generation after another has enjoyed the historically themed choreography, which treats the story of the ancient slave revolt in such a way that its true message is not the rebellion itself, but rather human emotions and choices under pressure.
