A francia forradalom nagy hatással volt a zenére is, különösen az opera műfajára. A Théâtre Favart-ban, a Salle Feydeau-ban és az párizsi Operában bemutatott alkotásokban már 18. század végén érezhető volt a romantika fellángolása. Európa történelmének meghatározó forradalma ösztönzően hatott minden komponista művészetére: megduplázódott találékonyságuk és kísérletező kedvük, ezzel mélyen megújítva a vokális írást és a zenei struktúrákat. A kontinens minden tájáról zeneszerzők érkeztek, hogy műveiket a francia fővárosban mutassák be: köztük Mozart, Piccini, Salieri, Cherubini - néhányan közülük véglegesen Párizst választották otthonuknak. Az új stílus alakításában a franciák sem maradtak alul: Grétry, Rigel és Dalayrac szakítottak a hagyományos szabályokkal. Aligha meglepő, hogy Beethovent is nagyban inspirálta ez a valóban „forradalmi” stílus.
