Ránki Dezső 1973-ban szerzett diplomát a Zeneakadémián Kadosa Pál és Rados Ferenc növendékeként. Tizennyolc évesen megnyerte a zwickaui Nemzetközi Schumann-versenyt, azóta világszerte koncertezik. Rangos zenekarokkal játszott szólistaként (Berlini és Londoni Filharmonikusok, amszterdami Concertgebouw Zenekara, párizsi Orchestre National), olyan neves dirigensekkel működött együtt, mint Solti György, Végh Sándor, Lorin Maazel és Zubin Mehta. 1985 óta Klukon Edit társaságában is koncertezik négykezes és kétzongorás művekkel, az utóbbi években Berlinben, Párizsban, Tokióban, New Yorkban és Londonban is volt fellépésük.
Kitüntetései közül legfontosabb a két Kossuth-díj, az Érdemes és Kiváló művész cím, a Prima Primissima-díj, valamint a Köztársasági Érdemrend középkeresztje a csillaggal. 2014-től Budapest díszpolgára.

The story of the Fountain of Bakhchisarai is set in motion by a romance recounting the reason for the khan's gloom.
