Maga Luther Márton üdvözölte egy költeményben, de hozzánk, magyarokhoz is kötik szálak. Bonfini krónikájából merítve először ő dolgozta fel színpadra Bánk bán történetét. A tizenegy évesen tanulni Nürnbergbe küldött Balassi Bálint pedig az ő dalain pallérozódva lett a magyarok mesterdalnoka.
Wagner ebbe a művébe életfilozófiáját, ars poeticáját rejtette el. A Liszt Cosima szívéért magával a bajor királlyal vetélkedő mester számára természetes, hogy a szépséges hősnő keze és szerelme a legjobb dalnokot illeti meg. Hans Sachs éppen ezért tanítja meg az opera ifjú hősét a dalnokmesterség titkaira. Ezzel a tudománnyal felvértezve a tehetséges lovag megnyeri a versenyt, és elnyeri Évája kezét. Ezután mégsem pályázik a mesterdalnokok céhébe.
