Az 1988/89-es évadban újították fel az Erkel Színházban Gounod közel 80 éven keresztül pihentetett dalművét, a Rómeó és Júliát. Szűcs Márta után a „második Júlia” a rendező Gulyás Dénes partnereként – szokatlan módon – egy zeneakadémiai növendék, Rost Andrea volt. A bemutatkozást hatalmas siker követte, ám igen gyorsan az is világossá vált, hogy a rendszerváltozás után már szinte képtelenség egy ilyen tehetséget az OPERÁ-hoz kötni. Rost útja a Bécsi Staatsoperbe vezetett, ahol néhány apróbb szerepet követően az együttes egyik oszlopa lett. Bécs után London, Milánó és New York operaházainak kapui is szélesre tárultak a magyar szoprán előtt. Rost Andrea az elmúlt másfél évtizedben ismét szorosabbra fűzte a művészi köteléket Magyarországgal. A koloratúr repertoárt fokozatosan maga mögött hagyva, sikeresen debütált Verdi-, Puccini- és Leoncavallo-szerepekben is.
