Egy kicsiny ország trónörököse, Anna hercegnő hivatalos látogatásra érkezik Rómába. Vele utazik az udvar néhány szigorú képviselője, minden percét protokoll események töltik ki. A lány fellázad, és egy váratlan pillanatban megszökik, hogy felfedezze az Örök Várost.
