A történet szerint Pájinkás János, aki születésétől kezdve nem evett-ivott mást, csak pálinkát, miután egy szempillantás alatt csecsemőből felnőtté vált, elindult, hogy megjavítsa Oroszországot („mert óriást le van a világ csehesedve") és legyőzze a sárkányokat, akik a napot készülnek levenni az égről.
Ámi sokfelé elkalandozó meséjét Kárpáti Péter sűrítette, egyes részeit áthelyezte, és gyakran apró változtatásokkal egészen új irányt adott a történetnek. Emellett más mesékből is átemelt figurákat, motívumokat, így vándorolt át a cári udvarba a darab másik hőse, Nemtudomka, az elátkozott kertészbojtár. A meséken túl maga Ámi Lajos, az ő emlékei és eszmefuttatásai is belekerültek Kárpáti Péter darabjába: ő a történet mesélője.
„Én ezt a mesét a tűzmestertül, a Bunkó Vincétül tanultam. Vagy ötszázszor lemondtam életembe a Pájinkás Jánost, le a fronton, az összes kocsmákba, a Dózsa téeszbe, a legutóbb egy magnyetofonnak is lemondtam. A magnyetofon, appedig fogta magát és lemondta az Erdész Sándornak, ammeg lemondta az Akadémijai Kiadónak, ammeg lemondta a Kárpáti Pétörnek, ammeg most lemondja magiknak."

The tale of Leander the goblin and Princess Linseed, brimming with magic and a seemingly unbreakable curse, not to mention a wealth of twists and turns, is a genuinely good yarn. Set to a libretto by Barnabás Szöllősi that is based on Andor Szilágyi's fable for the theatre and written at the OPERA's request in the 2014/15 season, Erkel Prize-winning composer Zsófia Tallér's masterful, expressive and entertaining music makes this Hungarian fairy tale opera an enjoyable experience for children and adults alike, and, we hope, a possible future classic.
