Not Just Me – Mariann Falusi and Guests

“When I first started putting this show together, I thought I would call it ‘Just Me’. This working title reflected both the self-confidence and fear I was feeling after the tremendous losses I had experienced over the previous year. Now alone, I had to move forward and find out whether anyone else was curious to see what I could achieve by myself.  more

Then, as time passed, I found myself with new work and friends both new and old around me, so the title somehow faded in meaning. There is no ‘just me’: I still have my companions, as well as the songwriters, the songs themselves, and the music. And the audience. So the new title became ‘Not Just Me’. Henry Purcell’s epic masterpiece, Dido and Aeneas has to do with the Trojan War. But what is even more important than the historical background of this hour-long little gem is love – as Dóra Barta, the director of the production highlights it, “Humanity has long known that if there is something you can die of, Love is certainly such a thing.

Pairing the two German composers, Wagner and the Wagnerian Strauss in a single evening creates a sweeping and overwhelming fusion of expansive melodies and driving dramatic force. The encounter between Wagner’s mythical intensity and Strauss’s modernism is a dialogue between two musical giants who reshaped not only German but also international musical life. In the performance of the OPERA Orchestra, their compositions promise deep emotions, dense musical textures, and sonic grandeur.
