Pest városában él János mester, a szegény csizmadia, kilenc gyermekével. Karácsony reggelén János különös ajánlatot kap a felettük élő gazdag házi úrtól: ha gyámsága alá veheti a varga egyik fiát, a kiválasztott gyermeket tanult, gazdag úrrá teszi.
