Egy kényszerképzetektől gyötört nő (Gizella), lenyűgöző fantáziával és íráskészséggel megáldva kerül a Moravcsik-féle elmeklinikára, Dr. Brenner megfigyelése alá. Orvosában erős függés van a morfium és az írás iránt, de jó ideje írásképtelen. A nő hisz abban, megszállta a Gonosz és megváltásért könyörög. Dr. Brenner új módszereket talál ki, hogy közel kerülhessen a Gizellában lakozó Lényhez. Kísérleteiről, pszichéjüknek felboncolásáról, majd a lemeztelenített személyiségek kapcsolatáról szól. Két régről fertőzött elme világai találkoznak. És elkezdik formálni egymást.
Fikció és valóság: Csáth életének több valós eseménye belekerült a történetbe a valós időrendet felrúgva, egy új fiktív történetté gyúrva össze. Gyűjtöttünk hozzá: Csáth Géza: Elmebetegségek pszichikus mechanizmusa (ismertebb: Egy elmebeteg nő naplója) című írásából, Csáth naplóból, levelezésből, novellából (A béka).

The story of the Fountain of Bakhchisarai is set in motion by a romance recounting the reason for the khan's gloom.
