It was a memorable moment when in mid-June 2013 the greatest tenor of present-day 21st-entury opera, Jonas Kaufmann walked on stage in the Opera House and handed a single rose to the greatest Hungarian singer of the 20th century, an honoured guest of every major opera venue across the world for 25 years. Now it is Éva Marton’s former and current pupils as well as winners of the international singing competition bearing her name honouring her oeuvre. Special guest star of the evening is one of today's most thrilling rising stars Jonathan Tetelman in his Hungarian State Opera debut.

Our offer
A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
