The marvellous Italian cellist, Mario Brunello appears at the Spring Festival as a guest of the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra. His international career took off after 1986, when he won the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, being the first Italian in the history of the prestigious contest to finish first. Since then, has played as the partner of the greatest orchestras.

He has performed under the baton of such conductors as Claudio Abbado, Seiji Ozawa, Valery Gergiev and Daniele Gatti. He himself first stood on the rostrum in 1994, and has since mostly conducted his own ensemble, the Orchestra d’Archi Italiana. He is also active as a chamber musician, and has appeared in concert with the likes of Gidon Kremer, Martha Argerich, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Isabelle Faust, Maurizio Pollini and Andrea Lucchesini. He will perform two cello concertos at the Festival, on a particularly valuable instrument made by Maggini at the beginning of the 17th century.

Haydn: Cello Concerto in C major

Nino Rota: Cello Concerto No. 2
