A Decsényiek ősi birtokán gazdatiszti állást vállal egy Török Béla álnéven bemutatkozó fiatalember. A magányos férfi addigi életét gróf Endrődy-Wittenberg Tasziló néven élte, amíg rokonai - és ő maga is - nyakára nem hágott a családi vagyonnak.
Minderről mit sem tudva, egy szerelmi csalódástól feldúltan érkezik haza Bécsből a birtok úrnője, Marica grófnő. A grófkisasszony minden kérőjében hozományvadászt lát, ezért elhatározza, jó időre eltemetkezik a vidéki magány összetört szíveket gyógyító csendjében.
Hogy csélcsap kérőit távol tartsa, elhíreszteli, hogy jegyese lett egy Zsupán Kálmán nevű - valójában nem létező - bárónak. Marica és Török Béla gazdatiszt azonban olthatatlan szenvedéllyel egymásba szeretnek. Egy útjáról eltérített levél, a sohasemvolt Zsupán báró váratlan felbukkanása, a segíteni akaró barátok és rokonok kissé összekuszálják az eseményeket, még Marica és Tasziló szerelme is veszélybe sodródik, amikor váratlanul megérkezik Bozsena, Tasziló nénikéje...

A 60-minute tour starts every day at 13:30, 15:00 and 16:30 in English. A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
