This performance by the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble presents a selection of iconic stage moments from “everyone’s Zsura”, evoking a unique creative world in which respect for authentic folklore, the power of theatrical vision, and dramatic sensitivity come together. The secret to Zsuráfszky’s art lies in his treatment of tradition not as an immutable legacy, but as a living language that can be given voice time and again. The gala evening is more than a mere birthday tribute though, it is a grand encounter with an exceptional career that has shaped the attitude to dance of multiple generations, and continues to influence our understanding of staged folk dance to this day.

Following on the heels of the introductory Das Rheingold, this opera about the tragic love between two of Wotan's children constitutes the start of the more tightly drawn dramatic trilogy. Once again, the laws of the gods clash: can paternal love save a lad who has violated the sanctity of marriage?
