A háború borzalmai és a zsidóüldözések elől, egy élhetőbb élet reményében Ausztriából az Újvilágba menekül. Színházra vágyik, de csak éjszakai kabarészínpadokig jut, a frontra induló katonákat szórakoztatja, mint sokan kortársai közül. Majd a háború után hazatérve azzal szembesül, hogy hazájának nincs szüksége rá. Lola Blau nem hős, csak egy azok közül, akik túlélték.
