Várdai István 30 évesen már egyértelműen a világ egyik legkeresettebb csellistájának számít, amit mi sem igazol jobban, hogy ő az első, aki a Ganfi Nemzetközi Csellóverseny mellett megnyerte a müncheni ARD Nemzetközi Csellóversenyt is.
A budapesti Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetem, majd a bécsi Zeneakadémia után Németországban, a Kronberg Akadémián folytatta tanulmányait, 2013-tól a világhírű intézmény oktatója. Mesterkurzusok keretében olyan művészektől tanulhatott, mint Natalia Gutman, Natalia Shakhovskaja, Schiff András és Starker János.
2010-ben debütált többek között a bécsi Konzerthausban és a New York-i Carnegie Hallban. Azóta fellépett a világ legrangosabb koncerttermeiben, többek között Londonban, Párizsban, München-ben, Genfben, Berlinben, Moszkvában és Tokióban. 2009-ben Junior Prima-díjat kapott, 2012-ben elnyerte a rangos Prix Montblanc-t, 2015-ben Liszt-díjjal tüntették ki. 2015-től a pécsi Kodály Központ rezidens művésze és – Baráti Kristóffal közösen – a Kaposfest Nemzetközi Kamarazenei Fesztivál művészeti vezetője.Hangszere egy felbecsülhetetlen értékű Stradivari-cselló, melyet tavaly decemberben kapott egy névtelenségét megőrizni kívánó mecénástól.
A Liszt Ferenc Kamarazenekarral több alkalommal is fellépett már. A február 14-i koncerten ezúttal Orbán György Búcsú Rasumoffsky gróftól c. darabja, Schubert Arpeggione szonátája (D.821) valamint Mendelssohntól az Op.20 jelzésű Oktett hangzik el.
