Szilvai professzornak az a terve, hogy gyámsága alá tartozó unokaöccséhez feleségül adja titokban nevelt gyámleányát, Mariskát. A fiú közben a professzor tudta nélkül Liliomfi néven színésznek áll, s mint „éhenkórász teátrista" meghódítja Mariska szívét. Az éppen megözvegyült professzor ellenzi a házasságot, pont attól félti a lányt, akihez feleségül szánja. Liliomfi pedig azt hiszi, hogy nagybátyja akarja elvenni szerelmét… Más választás nincs: szökni kell tehát! Mindenben Liliomfi hű színésztársa, Szellemfi van a fiatalok segítségére. Hogyan tisztázódnak a félreértések, hány szerepet kell eljátszania Liliomfinak ahhoz, hogy elnyerje szerelmét?
