Liliom, a ligeti hintáslegény, egy tavaszi napon találkozik Zeller Júlia mindenessel. Julit a körhinta tulajdonosnője kitiltja a hintáról, mert állítólag erkölcstelenül viselkedett. Liliom megvédi a lányt, és ezért kirúgják az állásából. Juli vele marad, pedig ha nem ér haza időben, őt is elbocsátják. Az estébe forduló szürkületben, egy félreeső padon együtt hallgatnak arról, amire nincsenek szavaik. És együtt kezdenek másnap új életet, pénz nélkül, lakás nélkül, munka nélkül, jövő nélkül. Szerelmük, azonban a külvárosi hétköznapok nélkülözésében, szomorú, tragikus véget ér...
