A fiatal Illésházi gróf adósságát megörökölve épp távozni készül kastélyából, mikor az új tulajdonos váratlanul megérkezik lányával Lili bárónővel, akik összetévesztik őt a komornyikkal. A gróf nem tisztázza a félreértést, mert első pillantásra szerelemre lobban a lány iránt.
A helyzetet tovább bonyolítja hogy megjelenik Illésházi régi szerelme Klarisse a színésznő is, hogy visszahódítsa a grófot. Szerencsére Lili bárónőnek is van egy vőlegény jelöltje Frédi, aki a most megismert színésznő iránt kibontakozó forró szerelmével és esetlen bájával akaratlanul is megoldja, hogy a szerelmesek többszöri szakítás és bonyodalom után egymásra találjanak.
