World-famous Italian baritone Leo Nucci has been counted among the most important Verdi singers of recent decades. Though he has also sung the great bel canto and verismo roles over his career, he is best known for the rendering of Verdi’s heroes, such as Macbeth, Count di Luna, Germont, Iago, and Falstaff. He has brought to life the character of Rigoletto on more the five hundred occasions.

He has taken part in legendary productions, appearing on the stages of famous Italian opera houses, as well as in London, New York, Paris and the Salzburg Festival. The partners he has performed with include Joan Sutherland, Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo. He has been invited by such leading conductors as Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, György Solti, Carlos Kleiber and Riccardo Muti.

A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
