Leánder és Lenszirom

The fairy tale Oleander and Flax Blossom is widely referred to as the most beautiful Hungarian fairy tale written since Csongor and Tünde (1830). Andor Szilágyi was inspired by Elek Benedek’s Collection of fairy tales Wonder Tree, but his romantic tale also incorporates the motifs of many famous predecessors: Beauty and the Beast, Wild Swans, and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  more

“I wanted to write a classical fairy tale that is instructive in every way. It has a hero we can relate to, an antagonist ’loathed by the public’, and a number of main and supporting characters showing human qualities that can be acquired and lost. The point is can we discover the story’s parallels with our own life, and that’s about more than the timeless fairy tale situation in which the good guy gets rewarded, and the bad guy is duly punished.... ”

Our offer

A 60-minute tour starts every day at 13:30, 15:00 and 16:30 in English. To request a tour in other languages (Italian, Spanish, German, French, Greece and Hungarian), please get in touch with the OperaTour team. Please note that the auditorium is closed for visits during rehearsals. Guided tours are not available during performances. For selected tour times, tickets are also available with the PreOpera Menu package. In addition to the guided tour of the Opera House, this option includes a themed set menu of your choice at OperaBistro, which can be enjoyed either before or after the tour.

As it is a latent Kodály season, it seems only fitting that the concert at the OPERA honouring the events of 1956 should feature works by the composer. In that same year, the short-lived Revolutionary Council of Hungarian Intellectuals elected him as its president. Throughout his entire oeuvre, Kodály consistently reinforced Hungarian national identity. The programme gains both colour and a ceremonial character from the hymn-like and dance-infused compositions of his middle and later years.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) Singspiel in Hungarian and German with Hungarian, English, German subtitles
