Párizsban, a 17. század derekán járunk. La Fontaine, a nagy francia meseíró mester inasa botcsinálta alkimista, akinek az egyik kísérlete váratlanul alakul. Kapu nyílik téren és időn át, időnként emberek lépnek ki az inas ládájából. Megjelenik La Fontaine, George Lucas, a filmrendező, Jacques Offenbach, a zeneszerző, a Kánkán atyja és egy váratlan helyzetben a Bíboros gárdistái is megérkeznek. Arra keresik a választ, hogyan is kerülhettek mindannyian ebbe a helyzetbe? Akiknek szívében egyazon mesék élnek egy helyre kerülnek téren és időn át, a Csodák Éjszakáján. Ezt a magyarázatot találják egy régi könyvben, és azt is, hogyan jutnak vissza: a hajnali kakas-szóval. De csak akkor sikerülhet, ha a szívükben egyazon mesék élnek. Rájönnek a megoldásra: játszani kell. La Fontaine mester műveit mind ismerik, és amíg ezt játsszák, ez él bennük.
