LITERARIUM - Contemporary Writers at Müpa Budapest
An evening with Dénes Krusovszky
In addition to his books of poetry, Krusovszky's two novels, Akik már nem leszünk sosem (Who We Will Never Be) and Levelek nélkül (Without Leaves), have brought him deserved and thunderous acclaim, with the latter a mainstay on the bestseller lists.
In a small town in eastern Hungary, the trees suddenly begin shedding their spring leaves. What could have happened - a natural disaster, or human malfeasance? How is it possible for people to continue living their day-to-day lives in such altered circumstances? János Koroknai, the Hungarian grammar teacher at the town's high school, sets about investigating the mystery. He shuttles through the streets of the town from a nearby old people's home to the classrooms and the houses of his friends. Gradually, not only are the secrets of his own family revealed, but also an understanding emerges of the functioning and dysfunctioning of the wider community. How can one behave with reason in a world that functions without it? Is it possible to maintain a sober mind in a crumbling society and a family that is falling apart? After the highly acclaimed Who We Will Never Be, Dénes Krusovszky's second novel seeks the answer to these questions.
