Öt ember, társadalmunk (és történelmünk) öt prototípusa, fogoly egy zárt helyiségben. Mindenkinek az a célja, hogy kijusson innét, kivéve azt, aki éppen a hatalmat (a stukkert) birtokolja és használja. Van kulcs a kivezető kapuhoz, fel van akasztva, de akinél a revolver, az mindig megakadályozza, hogy a többiek leakasszák. A stukker körbejár, mindenki másképp gazember és másképp kiszolgáltatott a hatalombirtoklás komédiájában.

While the Fountain of Tears bubbles before him, Giray, khan of the Tatars, is lost in brooding. Just as the flow from the marble fount cannot be exhausted, his own sorrow will never diminish, either. The story of the Fountain of Bakhchisarai is set in motion by a romance recounting the reason for the khan's gloom.
