A londoni Soho legmélyén Bicska Maxi, a sármos rablógyilkos titokban feleségül veszi Peacock, a koldushálózatot működtető üzletember egyetlen leányát, Pollyt. A koldusok királya azonban bosszút áll a bandavezéren lánya elcsábításáért. A rablóromantikát sem nélkülöző történet mögött feltárul a viktoriánus Anglia alvilága, ahol minden eladó és mindennek pénzben meghatározható ára van.

Ahol nincs becsület, mert “előbb a has jön, aztán a morál”, ahol pár pennyért mindenki elárul mindenkit, ahol a barátság hamis, a szerelem múlandó. A darab témáját Brecht előtt többen is feldolgozták. Az első egységes zenés játékot John Gay és John Cristopher Pepusch írta. Londonban akkoriban beszédtéma volt a betörő Jack Shepard története, aki megszökött a börtönből, s akit az ugyancsak betörő Jonathan Wild árult el a rendőrségnek, és akit fel is akasztottak. Bár a mű a 20. századi avantgárd színház része volt, mára már klasszikus rangra emelkedett, hiszen olyan, “slágerek” hangoznak el benne, mint a Cápa-dal, az Ágyú-dal vagy a Salamon-dal.

For the 14th time, the performance of the famous Symphony No. 9 will dominate the OPERA’s New Year celebrations. In 2027, the programme will be completed by two further classical works: Beethoven’s overture, also enhanced by Mahler, and a cello concerto by Haydn, the latter of course featuring an OPERA soloist.
