Eddig a történetben semmi rendkívüli sincs; ám az elhagyott szerető egy majdani híres író, ifjabb Alexandre Dumas, aki lelkifurdalástól gyötörve regényben állít emlékművet a híres-hírhedt kurtizánnak, és útjára indít egy legendát Marie Duplessis-Marguerite-ről, a halállal eljegyzett titokzatos Hölgyről. A történetet azonban Giuseppe Verdi tette igazán halhatatlanná, aki la Traviatájában formálta meg a Hölgy, a Szerelem és a Halál drámai háromszögét.
